The Power of Directed Attention

“Become aware that you can place your attention anywhere you want. You’re a sovereign being.” – Michael B. Beckwith

There’s a turning point on every spiritual path—a moment when we realize that awakening isn’t adding more to ourselves but instead reclaiming what has quietly slipped away. One of the most profound things we can reclaim is: our attention.

In a world designed to pull you in a dozen directions before breakfast (and a million before bed), learning to consciously direct your attention becomes not only an act of healing, but an act of freedom.

Once we begin placing our attention intentionally—on breath, sensation, or the simple experience of being here—we shift from being pulled by every mental current to becoming the one who observes it. That observing presence is where transformation begins.

Directed attention also acts as energetic hygiene. A few moments of inward focus before entering the world helps clear the residue of urgency, stimulation, and other people’s emotional weather. Instead of moving through the day with fragmentation, we meet it with coherence. Even a one-minute pause can reset the entire system.

A simple practice: set a quiet intention (“I return to myself”), choose one anchor in the body, and rest your attention there. When the mind wanders, come back gently. Over time, this practice expands your capacity to see clearly and respond wisely. Directed attention becomes a steadier and more spacious way of meeting life.
