Refine Your Expectations
Expectations are a set of stories that we make up about how our lives (and the lives of those around us) should unfold. They are based on judgments, predictions, and assertions about the future. But since our expectations don’t always manifest themselves, they often lead to disappointment.
When things don’t go as planned, expectations can cloud the experience with negativity and diminish your self-esteem. Imagine you see yourself as a highly creative person, expecting to write with originality and brilliance, untouched by external inspiration. A mindset like this can turn the act of writing into a high-pressure task, and one filled with self-doubt and frustration. But what if you approached writing differently—not as a competition or an obligation to meet some ideal, but as an expression of your heart with a very low standard for success? Wouldn’t it feel lighter, more fulfilling, and possibly even joyful?
This is why shifting your relationship with expectations is an extremely useful self-care technique. By loosening their grip—or letting them go entirely—you can make space for life to unfold naturally, without the weight of constant judgment or comparison.
Ultimately, expectations take away the joy of the moment, planting us in an imagined future that may never come to pass. This disconnect can strain relationships, amplify stress, and add unnecessary layers of anxiety. To work on staying present and joyful in your life, consider ways that you can reevaluate or change your expectations of both yourself and the world around you.
