Maintaining a Sense of Purpose

As technology further distances us from genuine connection with other people, it is easy to feel independent and only reliant on our own initiative. But, the fact is that the human race has only progressed as far as it has because we each have an innate drive to give to the world, and to see our species thrive and rise past our boundaries. Everyone strives to feel a sense of purpose. For some of us, we feel that from our careers, familial responsibilities, activities, etc. But sometimes, it isn’t so easy, and we need to do more to feel useful.
Here are a few ideas to try if you feel like you need an extra dose of purpose:
1. Volunteer
There are so many groups and organizations doing good for our world that are always looking for volunteers. These include: nature preserves and local parks, health-care facilities, food pantries, and many more.
2. Foster/adopt an animal
There are thousands of animals needing fostering/adopting in the Chicago area. Imagine the difference you could make, even if it was only in one life, by welcoming an animal into your home.
3. Get involved in your community
Your neighborhood is filled with opportunities for engagement. Some opportunities include getting involved with local programs, events, and boards and committees.
4. Brighten someone’s day
Brighten someone’s day with a simple smile or act of kindness. Just simply being kind to someone is one of the greatest services you can provide, supporting a happy world.
Reflection: Consider the ways in which you give to the world. Your gifts and talents are unique, and can be used to do so much, even if it is only by a simple gesture.
