Loneliness in a Full Calendar: How to Cultivate More Connection
Your calendar can be completely full and you can still feel entirely alone. Nearly 3 in 5 Americans say no one truly knows them, and half or more U.S. adults report feeling isolated, left out, or lacking companionship often or some of the time (APA). This loneliness epidemic isn’t due to lack of social contact, but comes from something much deeper: the connection we feel at each interaction.
To incorporate more connection into our lives, the first step is awareness. This week, try this: after communicating with someone, ask yourself if you felt your heart at ease with them. It’s okay if the answer is often no—awareness is the first step to progress. Now, pick one relationship that is meaningful to you and go deeper.
One of the best ways to foster deeper connection with someone is by asking powerful questions. We tend to gravitate toward small talk and trivial commonalities, but asking interesting questions about someone’s lived experienced is a great way to feel a deeper bond, forcing both you and them to think critically and reach meaningful conclusions about your lives. For example, learning about personal passions, motivations, greatest lessons, and subtle ponderings on existence can open the door to the best conversations and offer so many more insights than you would have alone.
It only takes a small leap to transition from the mundane to genuine connection. Through the lens of curiosity and care, we can renew the bonds that keep us together and remember that we are all learning, growing, and navigating life alongside each other.
