Find New Space for Grounding

With the infinite amount of stimulation available at your fingertips, it’s tempting to fill every break with some new thought or activity. But what if you used those few times you may have throughout the day, even if they’re just a few minutes long, to return to your center?

It can be challenging to set aside large blocks of time for self-care, but it’s much easier if you break them into smaller pieces. If you find yourself with as little as 5 or 10 minutes to spare during parts of your day, you can use these moments to relax, rejuvenate, and propel your self-growth.

The Practice

  1. Identify times throughout your day where you have a break or don’t need to be doing anything.
  2. During these times, find a quiet space (outside if it’s a nice day, in a quiet room, on a peaceful walk, or even in a car) where you feel comfortable and able to relax.
  3. Begin taking deep breaths, allowing your abdomen to gently rise and fall.
  4. Maintain a comfortable calmness in your body as you continue to breathe.
  5. Begin noticing the coolness of the air at the entrance of your nostrils when you inhale, and the warmth when you exhale. If your mind begins to wander, bring it back to these sensations.
  6. When you feel ready to return to your day, gently bring your awareness back to your other senses. Try your best to integrate the tranquility and quietude you may feel into your next activities.

Self-care does not have to be time-consuming. In fact, it can be much more effective if small bursts of effort are placed on it every day.
